Now don’t get me wrong, I love Multnomah Falls and think everyone should go there at least once, especially since it is so close to the freeway that you can easily include it when driving on I-84 East of Portland. But the location and ease of accessing the falls makes it a popular tourist attraction and is often very crowded.
Note: From Memorial Day weekend – Labor Day Weekend a Timed Use Permit is required to visit Multnomah Falls. Please check for permit requirements for all of these hikes before visiting.

Hikers will have a 16% elevation gain as they travel along a moderately trafficked trail that’s just under a mile long to reach the top. Located inside the Columbia River Gorge, Wahclella Falls is accessible by a short, easy hike which makes it perfect for families. This loop trail is only two miles long and with relatively low elevation gain, only 500 feet in total. The trailhead is easily found by taking Exit 40 off of I-84, and best of all it shouldn’t take more than an hour or two to complete.

Shepperd’s Dell Falls is picture-perfect and not to be missed when visiting Oregon! Located close to the historic Columbia Gorge Highway, the waterfall is easily reached by utilizing a short half-mile stroll down a mostly paved path with a few steps at its start.
The trail is usually in great condition, so you should expect to reach the pool under the falls within 30 minutes. Take your time though, as the elevation gain is relatively small and it’s worth exploring nearby areas too!
