Thinking of heading to Disneyland in October? Then check out this guide to help you plan your vacation. From October crowd levels at Disneyland, to the weather, celebrations, and beyond, we are breaking down what to expect at Disneyland in October 2021. Plus – we have a special travel deal for Disneyland vacations through October 31, 2021.
If you are wanting to plan a fall trip to The Happiest Place On Earth, October is likely a month you are looking at visiting. Maybe your kids are lucky enough to have a fall break, or you just really want to go during Halloween time at Disneyland. Whatever your reason, this guide will help you know what to expect as you head to the parks.
Disneyland in October – Annual Trends
I always like to start off my monthly guides with the annual trends. That way, if you are planning a trip to Disneyland for this year, or a year in the future, you can get a feel for if this is the time of year you would like to visit.
Once we cover annual trends, we will then move on to specifics for October 2021 at Disneyland Resort.
Crowds at Disneyland in October
As 2021 is a year that will set new trends, I will simply reflect on previous years. Remember that the need for Theme Park Reservations may change the crowd levels.
The crowds during the week in October tend to be pretty tolerable with the exception of Fall Break.
Most of the month you will see low crowds during the week, with evenings and weekends seeing more locals in the parks, creating more crowds.
Fall break Crowds
The exception to these lower crowds tends to be Fall Break. For many of the surrounding states, and some areas of California, fall breaks tend to fall in the middle of the month, often surrounding Columbus/Indigenous People Day. I expect that crowds from October 9 – 23, 2021 will be higher.
Weather at Disneyland in October
Disneyland in October can be a mixed bag as far as weather. While you may see a few days down in the 70’s, you could also have a heat wave sending you over 100 degrees. I once went in October and had an entire week be over 100.
Heat wave during your visit? Read my tips for staying cool at Disneyland article.
Definitely check the forecast in the days leading up to your visit and pack accordingly.
Even if the day temps are hot, definitely bring some warmer outfits if you plan to stay in the parks late. Once the sun goes down, and if there is a breeze, the temperature can drop and feel quite cool.
I suggest a hoodie and at least a pair of pants for the kiddos.
Annual October Events at Disneyland – Halloween and more!
Disneyland in October means Halloween Time. During this time you will see the parks decked out with fall colors, pumpkins, and more.
Disneyland Resort hosts an annual Halloween Party, Oogie Boogie Bash, which is a separately ticketed event. It is currently sold out for 2021. On those days, California Adventure Park will close early to regular guests, which means you will see Disneyland Park much more crowded at night.
In fact, the one time I have left the park without using a Fastpass for a ride was a night when I was in the non-party park on a party night. It was just so crowded we couldn’t stand it.
Attraction & Entertainment in October at Disneyland
Attractions and entertainment are slowly returning to the parks at Disneyland Resort. While we still are missing our large productions like Frozen, Fantasmic, and World of Color, we are seeing the return of the Dapper Dans, Downtown Disney performers and more.
Of course, there is one attraction that is the star of the show in October:
Haunted Mansion Holiday – Jack and his friends have decked the halls at the Haunted Mansion. This is the 20th anniversary of this special ride overlay. As a celebration of the 20th anniversary, the 2021 Gingerbread House pays tribute to all the previous houses. They even have a nod to 2020 in there.
I was just realizing that I actually went the first year the Haunted Mansion Holiday took place for my honeymoon, so it holds a special place in my heart for me now.
While some may not consider characters to fall under entertainment, I felt this was the correct place to put them. During October at Disneyland you will see Characters dressed in Halloween Costumes and you will see more Villains through out the parks.
A Musical Celebration of Coco
I love that this show is back. A Musical Celebration of Coco is my favorite show at Disneyland Resort. That is saying a lot because I do love some of these shows.
You will get to hear story teller Mateo, accompanied by the world-renowned Mariachi Divas, tell the story of Miguel and his journey to find love for his family and music.
You can also meet Miguel and his puppeteer in Plaza de la Familia.
Halloween Screams is a seasonal show hosted by Jack Skellington where the Villains take over the projections and entertainment at night. The show includes fireworks on the weekends.
Previously only available to Halloween Party guests, in 2019, this entertainment option was opened to all park guests when Oogie Boogie Bash premiered.
My favorite viewing area is near “it’s a small world”.
Disneyland in October 2021 – What to know this year
If you are heading to Disneyland in October 2021, here is information specific to this year. Be sure to bookmark this page as I will come back and update it at needed.
October 2021 Guidelines
At this time, all guests visiting the Disneyland Resort must wear masks when indoors. This includes many attractions, some queues, and experiences. Masks indoors are required unless you are actively eating or drinking.
The state of California strongly urges all guests to be fully vaccinated or have a negative Covid-19 test within 72 hours of your visit.
Halloween Time 2021
Halloween Time at Disneyland is a great time to visit if you love fall. From the decorations, to ride overlays.
You will get to see more Villains, many appearing at the Train Station overlooking Town Square on Main Street.
You will also find plenty of Halloween Sweets and offerings food-wise. My friend Britni has put together a great article after trying every Halloween offering… she is a trooper doing that for us non-foodies. Check out her must-try Disneyland Halloween Treats list.

Here are the current park hours for Disneyland Resort in October. We have already seen them extend the first couple weeks hours to remain open until 11 PM at Disneyland, but beginning October 18th, we show Mon-Thurs hours being 1 hour shorter at all locations.
Reminder that on Oogie Boogie Bash nights, California Adventure closes at 6:00 PM

Ride closures and Refurbishments in October 2021
These are the ride closures that we are currently aware of for October 2021:
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – This closed on September 7th, for a refurbishment. This ride will remain closed until November 5, 2021.
Sailing Ship Columbia – The ship will be down the entire month as far as we can tell. This is a normal time for them to work on the Sailing Ship Columbia.
Tarzan’s Treehouse – This was not listed in the refurbishments when I made my September guide, but went down at the beginning of September. It shows that it will be down through all of October at this time.
“it’s a small world” – The happiest cruise that ever set sail will go down to receive it’s holiday overlay on October 25, 2021. It will reopen as “it’s a small world holiday” on November 12, 2021.
Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage – This ride is still not listed on the refurbishment list, even though it is closed through Winter 2021.
