Thinking of heading to Disneyland in October? Then check out this guide to help you plan your vacation. From October crowd levels at Disneyland, to the weather, celebrations, and beyond, we are breaking down what to expect at Disneyland in October 2022. Plus – special travel deals for Disneyland vacations.

If you are wanting to plan a fall trip to The Happiest Place On Earth, October is likely a month you are looking at visiting. Maybe your kids are lucky enough to have a fall break, or you just really want to go during Halloween time at Disneyland. Whatever your reason, this guide will help you know what to expect as you head to the parks.

Disneyland in October – Annual Trends

I always like to start off my monthly guides with the annual trends. That way, if you are planning a trip to Disneyland for this year, or a year in the future, you can get a feel for if this is the time of year you would like to visit.

Once we cover annual trends, we will then move on to specifics for October 2022 at Disneyland Resort.

Crowds at Disneyland in October

2022 is the first Halloween season that is back to “near normal” so I will use previous years (pre-pandemic) to give an idea of what to expect. Remember that the need for Theme Park Reservations may change the crowd levels.

The crowds in October tend to be tolerable the first week, but then, as fall breaks begin, you will see a steep increase in crowds, especially during the week, through the end of October.

Fall break Crowds

For many of the surrounding states, and some areas of California, fall breaks tend to fall in the middle of the month, often surrounding Columbus/Indigenous People Day. I expect that crowds from October 7 – 23, 2021 will be fairly high.

Weather at Disneyland in October

Disneyland in October can be a mixed bag as far as weather. While you may see a few days down in the 70’s, you could also have a heat wave sending you over 100 degrees. I once went in October and had an entire week be over 100.

Heat wave during your visit? Read my tips for staying cool at Disneyland article.

Definitely check the forecast in the days leading up to your visit and pack accordingly.

A dress is my go-to when it is hot in the parks.

Even if the day temps are hot, definitely bring some warmer outfits if you plan to stay in the parks late. Once the sun goes down, and if there is a breeze, the temperature can drop and feel quite cool.

I suggest a hoodie and at least a pair of pants for the kiddos.

Annual October Events at Disneyland – Halloween and more!

Disneyland in October means Halloween Time. During this time you will see the parks decked out with fall colors, pumpkins, and more.

Disneyland Resort hosts an annual Halloween Party, Oogie Boogie Bash, which is a separately ticketed event. It is currently sold out for 2022. On those days, California Adventure Park will close early to regular guests, which means you will see Disneyland Park much more crowded at night.

In fact, the one time I left the park without using a Fastpass for a ride was a night when I was in the non-party park on a party night. It was just so crowded we couldn’t stand it.

Attraction & Entertainment in October at Disneyland

Attractions and entertainment have returned to the parks at Disneyland Resort. While we still are missing Frozen, or another option, in the Hyperian, Fantasmic, and World of Color have returned.

World of Color takes place nightly (excluding party nights) and Fantasmic takes place on the weekends during this time.

Attraction Overlays in October:

During Halloween Time and the Fall Fun at Disneyland, several attractions receive overlays.

Of course, there is one attraction that is the star of the show in October:

Haunted Mansion Holiday – Jack and his friends have decked the halls at the Haunted Mansion.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Monsters After Dark! – is an evening ride overlay for Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout! This is a continuation of the storyline and includes an original song.

Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree – Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree gets a mini-overlay on the signage and a change in music.

Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween – Similar to Mater’s, this overlay is mostly a change in music.

Characters

While some may not consider characters to fall under entertainment, I felt this was the correct place to put them. During October at Disneyland you will see Characters dressed in Halloween Costumes and you will see more Villains throughout the parks.

A Musical Celebration of Coco

I love that this show is back. A Musical Celebration of Coco is my favorite show at Disneyland Resort. That is saying a lot because I do love some of these shows.

You will get to hear storyteller Mateo, accompanied by the world-renowned Mariachi Divas, tell the story of Miguel and his journey to find love for his family and music.

You can also meet Miguel and his puppeteer in Plaza de la Familia.

Halloween Screams

Halloween Screams is a seasonal show hosted by Jack Skellington where the Villains take over the projections and entertainment at night. The show includes fireworks on the weekends.

Previously only available to Halloween Party guests, in 2019, this entertainment option was opened to all park guests when Oogie Boogie Bash premiered.

My favorite viewing area is near “it’s a small world”.
