Summer is winding down, the weather is hot, and you are looking to head to Disneyland. But is August a good time to visit? As always, we think any day is a good Disneyland day, but here is what you need to know before heading to Disneyland in August. Especially in 2021.
August is the last full month of summer and is a strange month. The parks see the last of summer crowds, and they start to transition for Halloween time at Disneyland. But it is also a great time to visit. In this guide, we will start with annual trends for August and then get into specifics for 2021. I will keep this article updated as much as possible, so be sure to bookmark it and check back often.
If you are looking to visit Disneyland in August, there is a lot to know. This guide will help you plan, but I also want to mention that you can book your vacation through my partners at Get Away Today. I have partnered with them because they love Disneyland as much as I do, and they also do their best to make sure you are prepared for what to expect in the parks. They offer discount tickets, hotel specials and more.
Disneyland in August – Annual Trends
If you are planning an August trip, I definitely suggest joining the Disneyland with Kids Group on Facebook that I co-founded. In there you can ask questions, read other guests’ experiences from recent visits, and more.
While I will talk about what we normally see in August, based off past years, please remember that after Disneyland’s extended closure and reopening, things have changed and 2021, and years moving forward may look way different.
August Crowds at Disneyland
August is a transitional month. Through Mid-August, you will have the typical summer vacation crowds. Families that have booked to come in advance. But many school districts in the west head back to school by mid-late August, and the crowds start to change to people coming more on the weekends, and in past years – Annual Passholders.
Disneyland has cancelled all Annual Passes, and has not announced a new program yet so where we would typically see Annual Passholders starting to come back in mid-August, we might actually see low crowds in 2021… maybe? Only time will tell.
Disneyland has also started a reservation system so they will be able to manage the crowds. Does this mean they will opt to keep crowds low at Disneyland? Not necessarily. But it does mean that they will be able to hopefully be prepared for crowds and have enough Cast Members to keep things running smoothly.
While I don’t like to use terms such as crowded or empty (because those are different for every person) there are usually more guests in the first half of the month, with a slight decrease in the last half.
I cover annual crowd trends here.
Weather at Disneyland in August
Have you heard the term “hot august nights” because that is what you will have when you visit Disneyland in August.
The weather in August is hot. Temperatures are usually in the 90’s or even reaching triple digits. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a great trip.
Read my tips for staying cool at Disneyland to make sure you are prepared to handle the heat.
The last time I went in August was 2019, and I made sure to leave the parks around 12:30 or 1:00 each day and if I came back around 5:00 pm I found it had cooled down a lot. This, combined with other tips will help you enjoy your time at the parks and hopefully not sweat into a puddle.
Annual Events In August
There really are not many celebrations that happen in August at Disneyland Resort. While July saw a federal holiday and Disneyland’s birthday, you won’t see any big celebrations in August.
Fireworks are a nightly event in August, and this is true in 2021 as well. This year, you can catch Mickey’s Mix Magic nightly, with Fireworks.
One annual event in Disneyland in August however is the closure of Haunted Mansion. Mid-month the ride will close down to be transformed into Haunted Mansion Holiday with a Nightmare Before Christmas Overlay. This ride overlay sticks around through the New Year.
This year, Haunted Mansion will be closed from August 16 – September 3, 2021.
Disneyland in August 2021 – What To Know This Year
2021 definitely looks different at Disneyland, and August will be no exception. Take a look at what to expect at Disneyland if you visit during August 2021.

Disneyland Restrictions, Changes, and Things to note in August 2021
As restrictions have eased, we will fewer restriction updates. Eventually I will phase this section out of my monthly guides. For now, the restrictions are as follows:
Guests are not required to mask outdoors.
Guests ages 2 and up are required to mask indoors, regardless of vaccination status. This includes on many attractions and in queues.
Guests are asked to be mindful of guests who may ask for distancing.
Guests are still required to purchase tickets in advance and make a theme park reservation.
Mobile Ordering at Disneyland will still be huge in August. However, as of the date of this being published, we know that Disneyland has casting calls for many food service workers. We hope that with that they will continue to add back standby foodservice offerings.
Reopening Update August
While most of Disneyland is open, we continue to see some closures throughout the parks.
We will see the parks mostly fully open by July, with most dining locations reopen. I keep my Dining Options list up to date as much as possible for what is open and what is closed. (I am a bit behind on updating that as I have been traveling for a few weeks… I will be updating it the first week of August.)
Of note: Plaza Inn Character Breakfast will return on August 12, 2021. Reservations should open soon.
The only rides we have not been given a date for at this time are Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage and the Monorail. Finding Nemo has signs up stating it will reopen in winter 2021.
